some updates

--My bus ride back from Boston last week featured a crying baby (well, sometimes crying, sometimes just loud high-pitched happy noises), an 80 degree bus, and traffic so bad that it took us 45 minutes to get from 60th St to 42nd street, which then caused class lateness and panic. Feel sorry for me. I sure did.

--Interviews went pretty well. Fingers crossed for my first real paying job in 2 years.

--Have to do a portfolio to graduate from ed school. Has to have some kind of "cohesive theme" that "illustrates our journey" through the year. I'm thinking "Frustration," "Disappointment," or "Seething fury." Suggestions welcome.

I particularly like "seething fury," however, if the goal is to actually GRADUATE, I don't suppose it is your best bet. Lol....

Hmm... I think mine had something to do with inclusion/classroom community. Basically, you just figure out whatever you have the most actual lesson plans/documentation/recorded experiences in and you make up something to fit it. I seem to recall a bunch of "the teachable moment"s, a couple of "incorporating XYorZ into the classroom"s, and a few "growth/change"s. Although, in private, my friends and I had labeled them "I can't believe I had to do this crap," "I'm finally done with this stupid school," & "If you're buying this BS, you're stupider than we thought."

Congrats on finally finishing up, though... and good luck on the job hunt!

Seething Fury sounds like an entertaining read but I don't know how helpful it would be career-wise.

First of all, congrats on the mention in USNWR. I felt suddenly in the know, though I've never read any of the other blogs.

Second, if an option, go the online portfolio route. Why? Folks in the ed world are seriously impressed with all things 'online'. No, it doesn't make any sense, but then look at those GRE scores for the top ed schools. Ouch.

Theme ideas:
-Developmentally Appropriate Best Practices
-Higher Order Thinking in Heterogenous Grouping
-Discovery, Inquiry, and Reflection
-Cooperative Learning in a Multicultural Environment
-Authentic Learning and Assessment
-Promoting Life Long Learning

Thanks for the suggestions on the portfolio topics, guys. Unfortunately, our topic is not supposed to be nearly as sophisticated as yours sound. I'm talking about things like "A flower blossoms" or "A journey" or "I hate myself." Actually that last one just slipped out. Don't worry, I'll figure something out. If I learned one thing in college, it was how to scramble for my life.

We have to do a portfolio of each year every year at the school I currently work at. It's a pain, but it can be helpful in being reflective on the year.
It isn't so much themed though as it is a general "What I did this year," kind of thing.
I guess the topic would be, "Why I Should Keep My Job." *LOL*

ak! portfolio!

Also ed grad student in midlife
career program.

We are the last class to do a portfolio. Hmmmm.
We still have to do something for student teaching though we're not sure what it all is going to entail.

We have to key ours to certain state codes and write reflections about some of the entries. I actually like this part as I do learn a lot from each assignment I choose to put in.

We were told do NOT scrapbook it! This is professional work! The more creative of us sighed. We had all sorts of ideas!
